How often should you color?
Since coloring is a meditative practice, many people ask how often they should be coloring to gain the full benefits. Like meditation, coloring is something extremely personal. It is difficult or even impossible to set a definite coloring schedule for another person. There is no wrong way to color, and no way that is more correct than another. Color as much as makes sense to you. The more you can color, the more benefits you will experience. This doesn’t mean that you should set yourself an aggressive coloring schedule that will stress you out. That would completely defeat the purpose!
Color every day
Many people choose to color every day for 30 minutes to an hour. This is a good ballpark figure because it gives you a regular habit to strive for and an amount of time that can be fit into a schedule fairly easily. When you color every day, you will begin to see long-term benefits from the practice, just as you do when you exercise every day.
When you color for at least 30 minutes, you are training your brain to work with different thought patterns. You actually change the brain waves and frequencies that your brain produces. This is what happens in meditation as well, but coloring is a fun way to make these changes.
If you start a coloring habit every day, you will find yourself looking forward to your coloring time. You may start to feel relaxed just by thinking about coloring. Eventually, it will become something that you can’t imagine going a day without doing. The calmness and relaxation you get from coloring will help you throughout the rest of your day.
Color as often as you get a chance
Sometimes it’s just not possible to color every single day, despite your best efforts. Try to make a habit of coloring every day, but don’t feel guilty if you don’t color one day. Coloring isn’t about feeling guilty or being obligated to do something. It’s about having fun.
Color whenever you need to practice self care
Coloring is a great opportunity for self care. It is something you can do to slow down and enjoy yourself for a while. If you are a parent, if you have a stressful job that comes home with you all too often, or if you are responsible for taking care of other people, chances are you need some self care and rarely get the chance to do it.
Self care is some time you set aside for yourself, to do something that is just for you. It can be anything that makes you feel taken care of – working out, taking a luxurious bath, reading a good book, getting a haircut, or knitting. And, of course, coloring can be self care as well. In fact, we’re willing to bet that it will become one of your favorite kinds of self care once you see how relaxing and enjoyable it really is.
Color at least once a week
If you want to use coloring as a way to indulge your creativity, it is good to make some time for coloring at least once a week. This is a good time to check in with yourself and see how you are doing, how you are feeling, and how well you are taking care of yourself. It is not uncommon for people to feel their tenseness start to melt away from their shoulders and neck as they color.
If you don’t have a lot of time to color every day or even several times a week, you can still get good results from coloring once a week. You will likely notice a difference in your stress, and you may even see positive benefits such as a reduction in your blood pressure.
